Celebrating friendship: The heartbeat of a happy life

The month of July ends with a beautiful reminder: The International Day of Friendship is on July 30th. In a world that moves fast and feels increasingly digital, this day invites us to pause and honor one of life’s most nourishing connections—friendship.

Friends remind us that we’re not alone. They share our joys, support us through difficulties, and bring laughter and perspective when needed.  Research shows that meaningful friendships can reduce stress, improve mental health, and even increase our life span.

Simply put, life is richer with a friend by your side.

“There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.”
Thomas Aquinas

This timeless truth speaks to the deep value of having even one person who truly sees and accepts us. Yet even the best friendships need care. In our busy lives, it’s easy to let texts go unanswered or plans get postponed.

But nurturing friendships doesn’t always require grand gestures—sometimes, the smallest acts speak volumes. A quick check-in, a shared memory, or a spontaneous coffee date can go a long way in keeping the connection strong.

Let's celebrate the International Day of Friendship with intention.

Whether you’re reconnecting with an old friend or deepening a current bond, here are a few thoughtful ways to show you care:

Things to Do with or For a Friend:

  • Send a handwritten note telling them what their friendship means to you.
  • Plan a walk-and-talk—fresh air and face time can do wonders.
  • Recreate a favorite shared memory, like revisiting a place you both love.
  • Cook or bake together, either in person or via video call.
  • Start a “just because” tradition, like mailing a funny postcard every July 30th.
  • Offer your time or help, especially if they’re going through something.
  • Gift a small token like a favorite book, a playlist, or a framed photo of you both.
  • Surprise them with a voice message instead of a text, it’s more personal.
  • Volunteer together, spreading friendship beyond yourselves.

Friendship doesn’t require perfection. It thrives on authenticity, consistency, and care.

So, take a moment this week to celebrate the friends who lift you up—and consider being that person for someone else.
