Welcome back to Flourishing Friday, a summer series inspired by my book Withering to Flourishing: 9 Ways to Bloom Again After the Storm.
Each week, I share key insights from a different chapter to help you live more simply, joyfully, and—most importantly—more connected.
This week’s focus is on Chapter 5: Prune Back What Doesn’t Fit Anymore. Just like a garden needs seasonal pruning to thrive, our lives require regular check-ins to remove what no longer serves us.
And in this moment—amid the ongoing heartbreak from natural disasters like the Texas floods, the emotional toll of ICE raids, and the heavy climate of political division—this principle feels especially vital.
In times like these, it’s easy to feel powerless.
But sometimes, creating space in our own lives can be a first step toward reclaiming peace—and even making room for meaningful action.
When we prune back what’s draining or distracting us, we often discover energy and clarity to do the things that matter most: checking in on a neighbor, showing up for a cause, volunteering our time, or simply being more present with those we love.
So, what does pruning look like today?
- Cut back on news consumption
Staying informed matters—but constant exposure to traumatic headlines can quietly erode our well-being. Try checking in less each day or switching to weekly digests from trusted, balanced sources. - Reevaluate relationships
Notice who energizes you and who leaves you depleted. It’s okay to lovingly distance yourself from relationships that feel one-sided or toxic. You don’t need to carry everything and everyone all the time. - Declutter your physical space
That overflowing closet or garage packed with “someday” boxes? They’re not just taking up physical space—they’re weighing on your mind and heart. Keep only what supports the life you’re living now, not the one you had ten years ago. - Streamline your wardrobe
Simplifying your clothing choices can bring unexpected relief. Curate a wardrobe that reflects who you are today—colors, textures, and styles that spark confidence and ease.

In Chapter 5, I share how my own clutter, especially sentimental items, and a sea of "misc" boxes—followed me from house to house for years. It wasn’t until I downsized multiple times (including living in a hotel room with my family and our puppy!) that I finally understood what we truly needed to thrive. That experience transformed not just my physical space but also the way I dressed, moved, and showed up in the world.
I reclaimed peace—and with it, the capacity to connect more deeply with what really matters.
Remember: pruning isn’t about living with less. It’s about clearing space for more of what matters—more presence, more purpose, more love. Whether that means finally saying yes to volunteering, joining a local cause, or just being more emotionally available for others, your inner clarity creates outer impact.
As Victoria Moran beautifully said, “When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these.”
